Mommy Mondays: Obama, a mom's breast friend

Little man is one month old today! In the long four weeks he's been here, we've conquered many things, but one that I'm most proud of is breast feeding. It was the one motherly duty I was worried I wouldn't be able to do. You hear so many stories of mothers who want to breast feed, but then they can't produce enough milk or their baby never figures out how to latch on, etc. I'm blessed to have a good little eater, but that wasn't the case in the beginning. We had a really hard time in the hospital. Poor thing was so exhausted from his travels out my hoo-ha, that he didn't want to eat at all. (or maybe his little trip made him lose his appetite, it did for me!) Either way, he only latched on TWICE our entire stay. The lactation consultants were fabulous and very patient with me. We were sent home with some formula to supplement, and I'm happy to say he only had to use it a few days before he was a sole breast eater!

Anyone that has ever breast fed a baby, whether it be two days or two years, can tell you how hard it is. It's a blessing to be able to feed your baby, but sometimes it's a pain in the ass. And not everyone makes it a clear choice for mothers. I was being sent packages of formula before Harvey was even born and breast pumps are a whopping $300.

So, when I was sent this article by my cousin that outlined some inclusions in Obamacare, I couldn't have been more thrilled. Our President and his Administration get it. Under Obamacare, most insurances are covering the cost of breast pumps, breast pump rentals and visits to a lactation consultant. How cool is that?

My insurance is United Health Care, and I was able to get a free breast pump through their provider, Lucina.

If you're currently pregnant, I encourage you to check with you insurance provider to find out if you're eligible for a free breast pump. I mean, wouldn't you rather spend that $300 on some cute baby clothes?!

Another reason to love Target

If you're not dropping into Target at least once a week, I'm about to give you a reason to do so. Or if you're like Kara and I, a reason to stop by nearly ever day.

I started following targetdoesitagain on Instagram, and it's already a serious obsession. I don't know much about it except it follows these very cute girls into the Target dressing room as they style their wardrobes with the latest adorable duds from Target. They put the cutest stuff together. I don't know about you, but sometimes I judge too harshly by how something hangs on a hanger. These girls have made me determined to try more things on!

Check them out on Pinterest too.

I'm going to have to talk to Matthew about increasing my monthly clothing budget.

In Love with The Little House

I may be the last Mommy in Kansas City to have discovered The Little House, but I'm happy to say I'm absolutely in love! I stopped in on Tuesday after hitting up the shoe repair guy in the Fairway Shops (another  must), and found so many goodies ... and all at 50 percent off!

According to the store's blog, the sale will last until February 2. Fall/winter clothing is 50 percent off, shoes are 50 percent off AND buy two, get one free, and if you spend $150 (which was easy to do!), you get a 20 percent off coupon for spring merchandise.

I picked up these matching dresses for the girls, which look absolutely adorable on and clean up nicely (Evie spilled a red drink on the lace within minutes of trying it on!)

I also discovered some new brands. These gray and lace dresses are by Somaa kids (couldn't find a website). The boots are by morgan & milo and see kai run (which I didn't know made shoes for bigger kids). The other two dresses I bought, both for Evie who keeps growing out of everything, are by Joules. Everything is super soft and should work well for spring and even next fall.

Now some of you may have visited The Little House in the Crestwood Shops in Brookside, but the new (and much bigger) location is at 2808 W. 53rd Street, Fairway, KS 66205 (right by Houlihan's). Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

I can't wait to go back (once I've saved up some more money or have a grandma in tow!) Next time I hope to take some pictures of the store itself - so cute - and the lovely sales team. Everyone was super nice and made my shopping trip that much more enjoyable.

If you haven't discovered The Little House, do so soon - and before this amazing sale ends!

Coat Crushes

Ahh the lovely Midwest. One day it's 60 and sunny and the next ... barely 30! Eeek! While most of us are already contemplating our spring wardrobes - and what needs to be added to them and pronto - Mother Nature (and our husbands) are telling us to slow down. Which doesn't have me off shopping - oh no. Now I'm just thinking I need a new coat. Here are the two contenders:

J Crew's Stadium Cloth Cocoon Coat in heather stone

North Face Metropolis Parka in black
Very different coats of course - I'd love them both! But the problem ... price! Both are around $320. The J Crew coat is supposed to go on sale - nearly every other color in this same style has already - but by then, who knows if they'll have my size.

Dilemmas! By the time I figure this one out, we'll be back in the 60s ... but maybe for next year! What's your vote on the coat? I'd love to hear from you!

Mommy Mondays: Just the two of us

First, we'd like to apologize for our lack of posts. Poor Kara has been super busy keeping up with all our paying gigs with me on maternity leave, and we haven't had much time for the blog. We're sorry!

Last week was a big accomplishment for Harvey and I. We left the house. Just the two of us. That meant, getting him ready for the cold weather, packing up the diaper bag, loading the stroller, loading the car seat, etc. And doing it all by myself was hard work. I was sweating by the time I got in the driver seat. I'm considering forgoing a coat for the rest of the season because it seems now that I'm a mom, I don't need it.

A few things I observed just getting Harvey loaded up.

1.) It's a two-trip process. I can't physically carry the stroller, diaper bag and car seat (with Harvey in it) by myself. It's all too much.
2.) The car seat is ridiculously heavy. I don't remember that being the case when Evie was born, but I can seriously barely carry that thing more than a few steps without having to stop and take a break and wipe the sweat from my upper lip. Am I just a total weenie?

After all the hard work, we must have had a good reason to get out, right? Well, we did. We met up with two old coworkers. Wendy is a new mom to sweet little Charlie, who is just one week older than Harvey, and Megan is an experienced mom to Emme, who is eight months old. It was so fun to get together and just vent about the struggles and joys of being a first-time mommy. I was so surprised by how many things that I thought were exclusive to only myself and Harvey that the other moms had experienced too. It's nice to not feel alone in all the strange things that I'm dealing with emotionally and physically. It's definitely been a roller coaster for me, and it's nice to know I'm not alone on the ride.

It was Wendy's first trip out with Charlie too, and we were both quick to announce that we hoped our babies didn't get hungry because we were NOT ok yet with nursing in public. We still have a few more hours of practice left before we've gotten the hang of it.

The girls and I got about an hour of gabbing in before the babies started in on their hungry cries, so Wendy and I quickly ran out the door. I had hoped that Harvey could hold out for the 30-minute car ride, but I haven't quite gotten used to hearing his cries, and only lasted the 20 seconds it took me to make an illegal u-turn into a strip mall. I quickly jumped out of the car, into the backseat and nursed him in the Hallmark parking lot. Once I discovered I had another hour or so of shopping out of him, we went straight into the Gap!

Although it's a lot of work getting the baby out, it sure does make the days less monotonous. Do you have any tips for getting yourself and baby out the door in a timely manner? Suggestions for how to make the outing less stressful?

Mommy Mondays

Harvey Robert Bland (one week old)
I've been on a little hiatus as of late. Most of you know we welcomed a beautiful baby boy, Harvey Robert, to our family, and I've been enjoying and surviving the first few weeks of motherhood. It's been a trip to say the least. We love our sweet boy more than I could have ever imagined but there are so many hard parts about being a mom for the first time.

1.) Post-partum recovery: No one really prepared me for how much pain I'd be in afterwards. From what I've heard from others, I had a pretty difficult delivery, but I had no idea how awful the pain would be when I came home. From everything from the first poop (which is a blog post in itself if you have a strong stomach) to the aching nipples (TMI, I know!). It was so hard to take care of him when I could barely take care of myself.
2.) Nursing: Nursing was awful in the hospital. Harvey only ate twice the entire time we were there, and there was nothing I could do. He had so much trouble latching, and I cried my eyes out when the nurses suggested I bring home formula for him. Of course, I wanted my baby to eat but I felt like such a failure when he wouldn't nurse. Now, I'm happy to say he's nursing like a champ and was past his birth weight at his two week appointment.
3.) Schedules (or lack thereof): These first few weeks have been HARD in part because newborns aren't on any sort of schedule. The only thing I'm ever certain of is that he'll eventually want to eat, poop and sleep. I'm such a planner, so it's been a struggle being so tied down to the house and not being able to plan when I can get things done. I'm also having a hard time just relaxing and sleeping when he sleeps. Who knew it would be so painful to the let the house get out of control. I'm realizing a lot about myself, and I really do need to just let go and enjoy this time cuddling with my baby.

There are probably a hundred other things I could add to the list, but these first came to my sleep-deprived mind.

Mommy Mondays is going to be a weekly blog topic where Kara and I hope to post about things that will be of interest to all the Moms and soon-to-be Moms out there. I've got much more to talk about, but Harvey is wailing for his next feeding.

Shared Rooms

For the last three nights, my girls have slept together - either in sleeping bags or beds, and it has me thinking about shared rooms.

Melina and I never shared a room - we're four and-a-half years apart - and there were only the two of us growing up in a four-bedroom house, so it never really made sense.

But ever since we found out we were having Nora so close to Evie, I started dreaming of their future together - snuggling side-by-side sharing secrets and giggling long after they were supposed to go to bed.

That dream started coming true when the girls received these sleeping bags for Christmas.

They were so excited!!

But they can't sleep on the floor every night, right? So if we decide to put them together in one room - Evie's would be perfect as it's huge - here are a few ideas that caught my eye ...

What do you think? Bunk beds (are they too young?) or side-by-side twins/doubles? Any ideas? Please share!
